In the past two decades I have been widowed
three times over. Mike committed suicide, Galen died an accidental
death, both leaving me without an opportunity to say a last good bye.
Danno, however, succumbed to AIDS, and in his final year my every
breath was breathed in devotion to him. After each death I found
myself feeling lost and alone. With no social recognition, legal
standing, nor family support, I felt belittled, silenced and outcast.
I find strength within a community of fellow
pariah. Like the authors of the Slave Narratives and the
survivors of the Holocaust, I am compelled to tell my
story. My stories are told through a combination of imagery, artifact
and text. But my voice alone is not enough. Creating Life After
Death: Embracing the Queer Widow has added my voice to a chorus of
others. We come together with pride and dignity. We collectively
stand, as one, the queer widow.
